Statement
Abstract art, once the vanguard of Modernism, made high-minded claim to individualisn, formal invention, and cultural renewal; ideals that have been recast as the myths of Modernism by many observers of contemporary art. The blurring of distinctions between high and low art, social and political cant and a fascination with spectacle that characterizes much of the art of the Post-Modern era, have generated new challenges and opportunities for contemporary artists who work in an abstract mode. My commitment to the language of abstraction stems from a belief that the expressive power of abstraction continues to hold potential for poetic visual experience.
